SEO - the ideal size a web-page

As I mentioned in some of the posts on page load time, a customer clicking away from your page because she/he cannot wait unreasonably is the last thing you may want to have. If you try sites or experts on optimizing your page for page-load, they will put forward a huge number of technical parameters that may not be comprehensible unless you are an expert of such topics. So, it is almost ruled out to master all these tricks.

What to do then? Let us look at some simpler aspects. Most of the experts recommend an ideal total file size of 30 K, which will load in 8 seconds or less on a 56Kbps modem, or 14.25 seconds on others. If this is the limit, consider reducing total page size to less than 30K to achieve sub eight second response times on 56K connections. Be sure to provide feedback for pages over 30K by layering your design to display useful content within the first two seconds. That will keep the visitor engaged. Try this. Got doubts, use the comments box to express your doubts.

Hi, How do you 'layer' a page?
I understand that a page is made up of code that you have created and stored on the host computer, and also any links that you might have, that show things from another location, such as a tagboard. But how do I control which loads first?
I agree with what you say about load time though, I have abandoned looking at some blogs, due to the loading being frozen waiting for some obscure and probably unnecessary widget.

Hi John,
The source HTML code for your page will be stored in your host's server. If there are no external URLs included in your HTML, all that appears on your computer will be your own. If you include widgets, scripts, etc., of your free tool/service suppliers, they will also open up, but not from your host's server, but from whichever server the URLs point to.
In fact you have no control on what opens up first. But generally, by default, things will open up as it appears in your HTML. In that order, your header / title of the page should come up first. It takes unusually long time if you include photos, images of heavy size. Keep it simple and low on the disk. Then comes your left menu , if you have one. Here too, heavy objects delay opening up. So avoid heavy downloads from your/external servers for this section too. If there is no left menu, your content layer will open up. Don't load it with heavy images so that it opens up easily. Even if you want too include heavy objects, place it at the end of the main content. Let there be text to start with so that visitors read it till other things come up. Then the right menu's turn also works the same way. If there is one or two more right menu's they will open up one by one.
Generally, the problem comes when you have a very heavy header, followed by all other sections with all sorts of external and internals add-ons, images, java, flash, YouTube, blah, blah.
decide your priority. What do you want? A text based blog/site or image based one? You want your visitors to wait till your page opens or leave?
Then the most important thing is your first page should open within a few seconds. You can give the heavy objects, as much as you want in the posts. They move on to archive soon, if you keep posting. Though all experts say your page should open within 8 seconds (30 k size), never allow it to exceed 15 20 seconds or not more than 100 k.
Also, as a general rule, if you have a very heavy photo (like say more tha

Thanks, Interesting. As you know, my blogs tend to be simple with few pictures, but that opening order as a guide is handy to know,
Thanks
